Shamanie Broussard and her four children have discovered that persistence pays off. Shamanie had applied twice to become a Habitat partner, and even after two denials she continued to work on stabilizing her financial situation and clearing her credit so that she could give it another try. Sure enough, after her third application round, she received her acceptance letter.
“If you want something, you’ve got to work hard for it,” she says. “I can do just about anything I want to do as long as I put my mind to it. You need to never give up.” The family had been living in a substandard rental unit in an unsafe area. Because of structural issues in the home, Shamanie’s monthly utility bill alone was nearly as much as she’ll be paying on her Habitat mortgage.
With the bulk of construction completed, the family began to feel the move-in excitement. Everyone, especially the children, couldn’t wait to get into their new home. “They’re so happy,” she says. “Every day I hear, ‘Mom, I’m so ready!’” Despite their young age, Shamanie’s two youngest children loved going to the construction site, hoping to help out the other volunteers. During construction, Shamanie and her two oldest children worked diligently alongside their mom, building the home of their dreams. As of November 2014, the family is settling into their new home, in their own rooms, and looking forward to better times ahead.
