Beneath her calm and gentle demeanor, Brenda Broussard is a fighter. She has successfully raised 4 grown children and served as the live-in caregiver for her elderly mother, all while working full-time for the local school system as well as taking on side jobs to earn extra money. However, her children’s successes have brought a new set of challenges to Brenda, and she has characteristically chosen to embrace them. When one of her children had the opportunity to return to school and another was offered a good job working offshore, Brenda made the decision to become the full-time parent to both of their children, 12-year-old Taylor and 8-year-old Braylon.
She began her partnership with Habitat in 2012 and completed her sweat equity requirements exactly a year later, saying it was “life-changing” to learn what goes into building a home and to interact with volunteers from around the nation. “It was exciting meeting people who came from everywhere, and instead of going on vacation they volunteered to help someone else have a home. It just makes you feel special.” Brenda has helped build at least four Habitat houses from the ground up, and continued to work on her neighbors’ homes until she moved into her home on August 25, 2013.
