Before Habitat, Walter was living in an unsafe situation and didn’t believe he could find better housing that was affordable for him. “I was living in a drug area and paying more than 40% of my monthly income in rent. I thought there was no way out,” said Walter.
Thankfully a friend of his had heard about the Lafayette Habitat for Humanity housing program and encouraged Walter to apply. So, he sent in an application and hoped for the best.
Even with his fluctuating work schedule and his reliance on public transportation, Walter managed to complete all 300 of his sweat equity hours in eight months time. His dedication to owning his own home paid off and construction on his home wrapped up in October 2012.
Now Walter lives in a safe neighborhood within easy walking distance of public transportation and shopping – and his monthly mortgage payment is far less than what he was paying in rent.
