Diana applied to be a Habitat homeowner in 2015 after a friend who also applied told her about the Lafayette Habitat for Humanity homeownership program. At the time, her home was near dilapidated and in serious need of repairs; the house was drafty, the ceiling was not completely attached in all places, and mold grew inside the home. Diana was eager to improve her current living conditions for both herself and her daughter, so she moved forward with Habitat’s application.
Through the homeownership program, Diana has become encouraged to improve more than just her living situation. “I’ve learned that I am very motivated, more determined, and more independent. I have more confidence in myself.” Additionally, Diana has learned much through the different required homeownership classes and activities: “I learned a lot out of it. It has shown me how to build homes and maintain my bills and to do less spending and more saving.”
Diana has completed over 360 sweat equity hours, and she continues to walk this journey with unlimited expectation. “My daughter, she’s very excited and she’s proud of me for being able to get this on my own.” She also realizes that this is only the beginning of her journey as a homeowner as she thinks about the growth of her family. “I want to be able to buy another home, something bigger for the near future just in case something happens to me. This is the start.”
Construction of the McNeil family home began in October 2017.
