Marwayne Zeno is a single father of three children, whose top priorities are providing for his kids’ needs and supporting their education. The house he was renting before Habitat was a roof over their heads, but the roof was leaking, and so was the plumbing. The landlord was slow to make repairs, but quick to raise the rent.
Concerned that their living situation was having a negative impact on the children, Marwayne came to a Habitat application meeting and was encouraged when he learned that he might qualify. “I wanted to own my home so that it could be a foundation set for my kids and my future grand kids,” he says. “I wanted a safe place we could call our own.”
Today, Marwayne and his family have that place. Their home was sponsored in part by State Farm, and the company not only donated funds to help build the home but also installed some special loss-mitigation features including impact-resistant shingles, a “Water Cop” leak prevention system, and even a fire sprinkler system. After construction wrapped up in September 2010, Marwayne and his children were able to settle down into a safe home of their own.
