Lafayette, La. (August 14, 2014) – Nearly 40 members of The 705 participated in a community engagement event with Lafayette Habitat for Humanity this Saturday in the McComb-Veazey neighborhood on August 23, 2014.

Volunteers will be building Habitat’s 99th home, which was designed by University of Louisiana at Lafayette Architecture and Design graduate students. The volunteers are scheduled to install exterior siding during their workday. Thanks to the efforts of The 705 and other community volunteers, this home is scheduled to be completed in November, 2014.

“We heard that Lafayette Habitat was in need of volunteers for the summer and knew instantly this was a project we wanted to be involved in,” said Kate Durio, 705 board member and philanthropy chair. “Our goals this year include promoting our unique community and culture, and helping build something residents can be proud of. Working with Habitat on their Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative in McComb-Veazey fits directly with those goals.”

In step with Lafayette’s newly-developed Comprehensive Plan, Lafayette Habitat for Humanity has chosen to “revitalize neighborhoods” by focusing its work for the next several years in McComb-Veazey, one of Lafayette’s historic core neighborhoods.

Lafayette Habitat is working in partnership with McComb-Veazey residents, who have developed a long-range plan for revitalization of their neighborhood, which will build community through restoring housing, beautifying the streetscape, creating historical markers, and developing community gardens

“We are thrilled to be welcoming The 705 to our construction site this summer,” said Joelle Boudreaux, Volunteer Services Director for Lafayette Habitat for Humanity. “This group of young professionals is committed to serving our community and we are thankful they will be contributing their energy and enthusiasm as we continue our work in McComb-Veazey.”  .
